Cloud Services

What is it?

“Cloud” is a much-used IT industry term that can mean different things to different people. In general, Cloud computing is the delivery of a set of pooled computing resources, software, and information to computers and other devices over a private or public network, such as the Internet.

Innovations in virtualization and distributed computing, as well as reduced internet costs and improved access to high-speed Internet have propelled and accelerated corporate interest in the benefits of cloud computing.

Cloud computing services are generally divided into three major categories:

  1. Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) is when an organization outsources the equipment used to support operations (including storage, hardware, servers and networking components.) The service provider owns the equipment and is responsible for running and maintaining it. The customer typically pays on a per-use basis.
  2. Platform as a Service (PaaS) is when a company outsources a combination of hardware, operating systems, storage and network capacity over the Internet. This service delivery model allows the customer to “rent” virtualized servers and associated services for running existing applications or developing and testing new ones.
  3. Software as a Service (SaaS) is a software distribution model in which applications are hosted by a vendor or service provider and made available to customers over a network, typically the Internet.
